Add Online Advertising

Online Advertising

Often described as 'Performance Marketing' or 'Affiliate Advertising', these terms mean you can put online advertising on your web pages and try to generate some additional income for your recruitment business.

Another industry buzzword is 'Monetization' and this means you are trying to monetize, or make money from your website.

Let's explore who are the key players in this activity:

  • The Customer.
  • The Publisher / The Affiliate.
  • The Advertiser.
  • The Advertising Network.

The Customer
This is the person who clicks your advertising and then visits another website, to browse, sign-up or complete a purchase online.

The Publisher / The Affiliate
This is you, as an owner of a website and you can make money through a combination of sales, leads or clicks.

The Advertiser
This is the company running the advertising programme and they are sometimes called the 'merchant' or the 'retailer'.

The Advertising Network
Often abbreviated to the 'Ad Network', this is a centralised organisation that brings together publishers and advertisers.

Most of the largest networks are global and some examples of the leading networks include:

  • Affiliate Window.
  • Commission Junction.
  • Affiliate Future.
  • Trade Doubler.
  • Link Share.
  • Share a Sale.
  • Imact Radius.

Types of Advertising

There are different types of advertising and perhaps the most popular is CPS – Cost Per Sale advertising (also known as PPS – Pay Per Sale advertising).

Put simply, CPS means a customer clicks your advert, visits another website, makes a purchase and then you get a commission on the sale.

Another popular type of advertising is PPC - Pay Per Click, whereby your get paid if somebody clicks your advert visits another website. In this case, the payment value of the click can be quite small, because the commission is not dependent on whether or not the referred customer makes a purchase.

Google AdSense is the world's biggest PPC advertising network.

How Does It Work?

Let's take an example and assume you are the owner of a recruitment website specialising in the travel industry, and you wish to place advertising for lastminute.com on your site.

The most important point to mention here is that you should finish your website first and make it look as professional as possible. If you approach a network with a half-finished website, your application might not even get approved.

Furthermore, you will have to apply to each advertiser (that is normally one-click process) and advertisers will not be interested in your website if it looks unfinished or shoddy.

Now let's assume you wish to join Affiliate Window because it has over 1,600 advertisers worldwide.

After you have signed up, you would log Affiliate Window. Next, you would search and browse for advertisers.

A very important point to mention here is that you should choose advertisers and advertising which will enhance and sit comfortably on your website.

For example, if your website is about travel, then it would make perfect sense to feature advertising from lastminute.com. Conversely, if your website is about travel, it would probably make no sense to feature advertising about pet food, cosmetics, jewellery, or whatever.

In summary, choose advertising to complement and enhance your website, as per the example below:

Getting back to this scenario, you would log into Affiliate Window, go to the travel section and then apply to the travel industry advertisers of your choice.

As part of the process, the advertiser will normally visit your website before granting approval, but sometimes approval is provided automatically.

After the approval has been received, once again you would log into Affiliate Window and get your advertising code, and finally add the code to your web page (please see below).

Now your web page is ready to generate additional income for you.

How to Paste Advertising Code on your Web Page

Here are the steps for adding advertising code to your web page:

  • If you are editing a 'Page' or a 'Gallery' item, just click the small 'HTML' button (on the right-hand side).
  • Now 'Paste' your advertising code into the window.
  • Click 'Update' and 'Save' (at the bottom).
  • And that's it!
  • Now you should preview your website to view the adverts.
